Item Open Access A study of the pragmatics of english in the applied linguistics school at PUCESE 2016-I(Ecuador - PUCESE- Escuela de Lingüística Aplicada, 2016-10-25) Rengifo Obando, Marlene ElizabethAn analysis of the main difficulties related to pragmatics of the English language was done in the Applied Linguistics School (ALS) at the Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador in Esmeraldas (PUCESE). A descriptive and qualitative investigation was carried out by using the deduction and induction methods; besides, some techniques such as observation, survey, and test were applied to a population of 43 students of third, sixth, and eight levels from the ALS were English is taught as a foreign language (EFL). The results revealed that the linguistic component investigated, pragmatics, is not taken into consideration at all, in the English language teaching-learning process. Learners, throughout the techniques employed, corroborated their lack of pragmatic competences of the English language when producing it. Several misinterpretations were noticeable in the test operated (Appendix 3). This research coincides with a number of investigations done related to pragmatics. Those provided techniques and some materials to let learners be aware of the linguistic component studied. Los resultados mostraron que los estudiantesChachi tienen dificultades de aprendizaje en relación con la gramática, la falta devocabulario, el orden correcto de las palabras y la pronunciación; Las habilidades en lasque presentan dificultades son las principales: hablar, leer, escribir y escuchar. Con el propósito de analizar los errores de pronunciación más comunes en el pasado de los verbos regulares que tienen los estudiantes de segundo nivel de inglés, se realizó una investigación cuantitativa y descriptiva en el campus de Esmeraldas de la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Ecuador, para lo cual se utilizaron los métodos de análisis, síntesis y hermenéutica, con las técnicas de observación y encuesta, que se aplicaron a 20 estudiantes y 3 profesores de inglés del segundo nivel de inglés general en la mencionada universidad. This research is focused on the methodology applied by the English teacher in the ninth year of basic education in San José Obrero Educational Unit", in the city of Esmeraldas. Methodological strategies that are used by the English teacher were described and also investigated to find a conclusion. One hundred of students, the Rector of the high school and the English teacher were the participants of this investigation. The conclusions that have been reached were: the methodology that the teacher is using to teach English language is traditional, she does not use appropriate methods and strategies, correct teaching materials, the teacher is the one who evaluates and she always does it in the same way; the work in the classroom is individual, there is not group work. The students from ninth years have some deficiencies in the development of basic skill raking on the scale between middle satisfactory to little satisfactory. These facts origin difficulties in the learning process, sometimes they do not understand what they are listening; they cannot communicate and write with a correct grammar. One of the most important points that this research showed is that students are unmotivated and that is why they have a low performance in class. The authorities must help to the teacher to improve the students learning, been a guidance for the teacher, giving her correct material and technology appropriate. All those things can be improve specially applying the right methodology. The recommendations according to the conclusions are: the teacher must vary the methods, strategies and the ways of evaluate students’ knowledge. Also she has to motivate students using didactic materials, not only based on the student book; she should expend more time warming up and introducing a new topic by technology according to the age of students. It is known that the methodology used to teach English is the base of the teaching-learning process and ensures a correct learning, and an excellent communication in English.Item Open Access ANALYSIS OF 3RD LEVEL INCLUDED STUDENTS’ ENGLISH LEARNING DIFFICULTIES AT HISPANOAMERICA SCHOOL IN ESMERALDAS, 2018(Ecuador - PUCESE- Escuela de Lingüística Aplicada, 2019-07-11) Heredia Canchingre, CamilaTeaching English to included students has become an important role in the development of a level class. Regularly, as has been noted, many institutions within the city bring about the problem of students with learning difficulties and, in certain cases, these students end up being excluded from classes. To avoid them, inside of those level classes the teachers need to find some ways or methods to apply in different classes or levels to obtain good results at the time that students develop a correct internalization of knowledge. The diagnosis of included students’ English learning problems is crucial to carry out an effective inclusion process. An investigation was carried out, to recognize the different learning difficulties that exist in the 3rd grade E.G.B in the Hispano America Primary School. A descriptive, qualitative investigation was done with the use of the methods of analysis and synthesis and hermeneutics, and the techniques of observation which were applied to 28 students from 3rd grade E.G.B at Hispano America School in Esmeraldas. The results reveled that at the beginning, the students did not show a complete interest in the English class, this problem evidenced that the methodologies applied by the teacher there were not the correct ones that the included students need to develop the learning of English in a better way. To carried out an active English class, the teacher needed to know the different types of students in his classes and the different ways to teach them so that they can internalize the knowledge of the English Language. This coincided with the results in previous studies, about different methodologies that a teacher can apply to develop the knowledge of students with learning difficulties.Item Open Access ANALYSIS OF A GENDER-BASED CORPUS OF 6TH LEVEL ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS AT PUCE ESMERALDAS, 2017(Ecuador - PUCESE- Escuela de Lingüística Aplicada, 2018-02-07) Ballesteros Chica, María GabrielaThe study of English as a foreign language has been presenting difficulties in the different educational levels, taking into account the high impact of the internal and external factors that influence the teaching-learning process to people who want to improve Linguistics skills. This research focuses on the study of gender as a consequence of a high or low level in university performance with respect to ESOL at the Catholic University of Ecuador in Esmeraldas. After the compilation of a learner corpus from sample texts which were compiled through Google forms, linguistic analysis was carried out by means of the application of quantitative and qualitative methods in order to obtain a systematic summary of errors in the learner.s corpus while taking several parameters into account, such as age, years of training and, especially, gender. Statistical data were collected with AntConc and, by means of a comparison of the results obtained, it revealed that errors were more prevalent in male students than on female at the time of composing general domain texts in English. In addition, we present a summary of the most frequent errors that University students commit while using English as a foreign language.Item Open Access ANALYSIS OF CURRICULAR ARRANGEMENTS FOR ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING TO SECOND LEVEL STUDENTS WITH COGNITIVE DISABILITIES AT MARIA AUXILIADORA SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL IN ESMERALDAS(Ecuador - PUCESE- Escuela de Lingüística Aplicada, 2019-08-07) Ortiz Ayovi, Yinela BriggitteThe curricular arrangements are the modifications of the ordinary curriculum to respond the individual learning needs presented by a student with special educational needs. With the purpose to analyze the design of curricular arrangements which are useful for English language teaching to students with cognitive disabilities of second level at “María Auxiliadora” Senior High School in Esmeraldas, 2018, a descriptive, qualitative- quantitative investigation was done with the use of the analytic, synthetic, hermeneutic and descriptive statistics methods; and the techniques of survey and survey which applied during three weeks to 2 English teachers of second level of Senior High School at “Maria Auxiliadora” in Esmeraldas. The results revealed that the teachers design curricular arrangements, but they sometimes do not apply them in the classroom and these students do not develop the English language. It was evident that most of the time the teachers did not use appropriate methodologies to include students with cognitive disabilities. This coincided with the results of previous studies about the curricular arrangements that some English teachers designed to include students with cognitive disabilities. In addition, the English teachers must activate the English language skills in the referred students.Item Open Access ANALYSIS OF THE MOST COMMOM WORDS CALLED “FALSE FRIENDS” OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE THAT INTERFERE THE STUDENTS’ READING UNDERSTANDING AT PUCESE(Ecuador - PUCESE- Escuela de Lingüística Aplicada mención Inglés, 2016-02-02) Guevara Loor, Daniel IsraelThe words called "cognate" are found in different parts and languages around the world, knowing that their spelling and meaning look similar. Besides, they can help students with a wide range of vocabulary and reading comprehension tasks. However, it should be noted that words that seem alike, which are called false friends, require special attention: they have different meanings in all contexts. This research, which is based on cognates and false friends, focus on classifying, identifying and understanding the origin of such words and establishing how they have affected students in recent years in learning English as a foreign language. This study is qualitative and quantitative in order to get a comprehensive illustration of the difficulties encountered by students of the Catholic University in the city of Esmeraldas, who in some cases try to understand texts in English, but most are confused by certain words in the language known as "false friends." In order to complete the work on the identification of cognates and false-friends words, a diagnosis was preceded on the students’ knowledge regarding this issue, through a survey directed to all students of different careers at PUCESE. The main principal objective of this study was to determine what are the most common words called false friends of the English language that interfere the students’ reading understanding at PUCESE. The results showed that false friends that are derived from linguistics reciprocity and partly ignored by students are a major problem in their reading understanding. Based on the results, some conclusions were provided and some recommendations were given to both teachers and students of General English at PUCESE to handle such a problem. The results allowed the design of an educational material for learning English that will benefit the students.Item Open Access Bilingualism: Main Problems in Article Choice by Children Learning English as a Second Language(Ecuador: PUCESE - Escuela de Lingüística Aplicada, 2015-10-12) Makarian Palazian, María KrikorThe aim of this research was to define what bilingualism is and to describe the advantages and disadvantages that children have during the process of learning a second language. Data was collected through an interview applied to teachers in order to get information about their background and the methodologies they use. Also, an interview and a test were applied to students in order to diagnose their use of the language and their knowledge about articles. The investigation was carried out at “Don Bosco” Fiscomisional School in Esmeraldas. The sample was made up by 6 teachers and 114 students of the mentioned school. Results showed that half of teachers have an academic degree. According to results, teachers think that grammar is the most appropriate and significant skill that students need to become bilingualism and they considered that practicing the speaking is the best way to lead bilingualism. According to students’ answers, most of them did not have any relatives who manage the target language, and almost half of them do not know how to use the articles. It was recommended that teachers should attend more seminars to learn about new methodology trends to apply bilingualism in the school in order to help students improve their knowledge about English articles.Item Open Access BOOK FOR TEACHING ENGLISH FOR SPECIFIC PURPOSES TO STUDENTS OF THE LAST SEMESTER OF THE SPECIALITY OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION AT PUCE ESMERALDAS(Ecuador - PUCESE- Escuela de Lingüística Aplicada, 2019-08-08) Muñoz Toala, Irina NathalyWith the purpose to design a book for teaching English for Specific Purposes to students from the last semester of Business Administration at PUCE Esmeraldas, a descriptive, qualitative-quantitative research was undertaken, by using methods as analysis, synthesis and hermeneutics, the survey technique was applied to 17 Business Administration students from September 2018 to January 2019. The results showed that students did not have knowledge of terminology, applied phrases, vocabulary and communicative functions which are caused by the lack of resources and materials, and the lack of knowledge of ESPB at the university. The results coincide with previous studies about the importance of the creation of a business book for students in order to achieve the process of Business English learning. In conclusion, to design a book of Business English to students increase their knowledge about specific terminology for the career, besides for their future jobs in which applying communicative functions with foreign people around the world is important, and as a teachers’ guide by taking into account different strategies, activities and exercises to help students.Item Open Access BOOK TO TEACH ENGLISH FOR SPECIFIC PURPOSES (ESP) TO STUDENTS FROM THE APPLIED LINGUISTICS SCHOOL WHO WORK AS TRANSLATORS IN THE ECUADENT PROGRAM IN ESMERALDAS(Ecuador - PUCESE- Escuela de Lingüística Aplicada, 2018-01-03) Murillo Oyarvide, Luisa MaríaWith the aim of designing a book for the teaching of English for Specific Purposes for the students from the Applied Linguistics School at PUCE Esmeraldas who work as translators in the ECUADENT program, a mixed investigation, quantitative and qualitative was carried out with the analytical-synthetical and hermeneutic methods and the techniques of survey and test, which were applied to a sample of 13 students of 5th and 8th level from the Applied Linguistics School who have participated in the referred program. The results showed students’ lack of knowledge about communicative functions which are essential for the doctor-patient, doctor-nurse, doctor-relative interaction and also lack of medical lexicon in English which allows having communication and appropriate translation in the health care. Besides, the lack of a book to use as a didactic material for the training of the students was revealed. The diagnosis allowed the design of a book to teach English for Medical and Dental Purposes for the program referred which has six didactic units with related contents to maxillofacial plastic surgery and odontology.Item Open Access BOOK TO TEACH ENGLISH FOR SPECIFIC PURPOSES TO 7th AND 8th LEVEL STUDENTS OF THE FOREIGN TRADE SCHOOL AT PUCE ESMERALDAS, 2018.(Ecuador - PUCESE- Escuela de Lingüística Aplicada, 2019-07-08) Sosa Daza, Erick PaúlTo design a book to teach English for the specific purpose of Foreign Trade at PUCE Esmeraldas, a descriptive qualitative-quantitative investigation was done, in the year 2018, with a population of 36 students, and 10 teachers from the 7th and 8th levels of Foreign Trade at the referred career. The methods of analysis and synthesis, hermeneutics, and statistics, were used with the technique of survey. The results revealed that the majority of the students considered that a didactic material was needed to learn ESP about their career, with themes related to foreign trade, administration, economics and international marketing; alongside, with terms specific to the specialty such as: international contract, customs, money market, airport, and secondary zone; plus, communicative functions like interviewing people in customs, exporting, importing, and marketing. The results also revealed that the methods the pupils would like to use in the classroom are translation, and the communicative approach.Item Open Access BOOKLET DESIGN FOR ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING TO TOURISM EMPLOYEES FROM “PLAYA ALMENDRO” RESORT IN TONSUPA, ESMERALDAS, 2018.(Ecuador - PUCESE- Escuela de Lingüística Aplicada, 2019-07-08) Córdova Montaño, Edwin DanielWith the purpose to design a booklet to teach English to tourism employees from “Playa Almendro” Resort in Tonsupa, for communicating with foreign tourists, a descriptive qualitative-quantitative investigation was carried out with the use of the method of analysis and synthesis, hermeneutics, and statistics, with the techniques of survey which was applied to tourism employees of the mentioned touristic center. The results obtained revealed that the surveyed workers had necessity to learn the English related to hospitality and tourism, and they showed interest to learn. The diagnosis of the necessities of the workers, concerning English learning, allowed the creation of the didactic material. It is concluded that the design of the book to teach English for tourism employees was based on the needs of learners, and it will be very meaningful for them.Item Open Access Common written english grammatical mistakes in the students from the applied linguistics school at PUCE in Esmeraldas(Ecuador - PUCESE- Escuela de Lingüística Aplicada, 2017-08-22) López Estupiñán, BorisTo analyze common written English grammatical mistakes in the students from the Applied Linguistics School at PUCESE, a prospective quanti-qualitative descriptive investigation was carried out, with the analytical-synthetical, the hermeneutic, and the statistical methods, using a survey, which contained open and closed questions to know specific information and students. opinions, and a test applied to the total of 45 students from the Applied Linguistics School, where they had to write a short essay about their future professional expectations. The results showed that all the students agreed that grammar must be taught during all the semesters so that they can learn it correctly and improve their knowledge. Besides, they think that grammar is the most important linguistic component to develop their communicative competence properly. The results also revealed that the most common written English grammatical mistakes are the use of the infinitive, specifically the for+ing form, the conjugation of the verb using the third person singular, and the verb tenses in general. There were coincidences with the results provided by several investigators in the field. It is concluded that Grammar must be taught during all the semesters until students finish their studies. Some tasks to teach grammar communicatively, with the necessary methodological orientations, were provided.Item Open Access CONTRIBUTION OF THE COLLEGE HORIZONS PROGRAMME TO THE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL CHACHI AND AFRO STUDENTS’ DEVELOPMENT OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE COMMUNICATIVE COMPETENCE IN ESMERALDAS.(Ecuador - PUCESE- Escuela de Lingüística Aplicada, 2019-07-11) Toro Reina, Valeria PaolaWith the purpose to know the contribution of the College Horizons Programme to the Senior High School Chachi and Afro students’ development of the English language communicative competence, a qualitative-quantitative research was done in the Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador in Esmeraldas, with the use of the methods of analysis, synthesis and hermeneutics, and the techniques of documentary review, survey and observation guide. The research was carried out from January to September of 2018. Examination comparisons were made to the 15 Chachi and Afro students of the programme which consisted of all the exams the students took in the programme till they got the A2 level. On the other hand, the surveys were applied to both: teachers and students immersed in the programme, and the observation was done in 10 classes and revealed that they significantly improved their communicative competence in the English language. Besides, the survey applied to teachers and students revealed that students pay close attention to the teacher’s instruction, ask questions when they do not understand something and foment self-correction. Moreover, the applied surveys and the observation indicated that the teachers use different methods, among which the Communicative Method and the Direct one stand out. They also indicated that the teachers prefer to use group work and warm up activities as teaching strategies.Item Open Access Creación de un CD para enseñar gramática: el uso de IN-ON-AT”(2015-04-09) Rodas Luque, Maria JoseThis study has as its main objective to create an innovative and modern material, applying some approaches of second language acquisition and different language methods. The chosen topic to create the material was the use of in, on, and at. The reason for this focus is that these prepositions are words used daily, and can be confusing for English language learners. These misunderstandings are due to interference errors and the lack of knowledge about the use of these prepositions. The creation of this material takes into account theories about second language acquisition, language teaching methods, teachers and learners’ characteristics, and how they are related. Also, it describes the use of technology, especially CALL and multimedia. The first one mentions how people use computers to learn a language. The second one, multimedia, explains how combining different elements (texts, sounds, images videos) makes the creation of the CD possible. The resulting CD is based on the idea that repetition helps students to use the language automatically. Also, it uses different teaching methods and activities. In summary, the results obtained in the questionnaire applied to English teachers in Esmeraldas, show that the CD could give positive outcomes if it is used in the classroomItem Open Access El desarrollo de habilidades orales en el idioma inglés para fines específicos (esp) de los estudiantes de Enfermería de 6º nivel en la PUCE Esmeraldas, 2018.(Ecuador - PUCESE- Escuela de Lingüística Aplicada, 2019-09-24) Estupiñán García, Gladys RominaCon el propósito de analizar el desarrollo de las habilidades orales, se realizó una investigación descriptiva, cuanti-cualitativa, con el uso de los métodos de análisis y síntesis., hermenéutico y la técnica de encuesta, la que se aplicó a 37 estudiantes de enfermería en la PUCE Esmeraldas de enero a septiembre de 2018. Los resultados revelaron que los estudiantes consideraron que sería bueno y eficiente mejorar el nivel de inglés para que puedan tener conocimientos suficientes sobre ESP, a partir de los cuales se desarrolla el resto de las habilidades lingüístico-profesionales. Sería beneficioso si los maestros enseñaran el idioma inglés con términos médicos en los diferentes niveles de inglés en la carrera de Enfermería, para que los estudiantes puedan desarrollarse en la práctica profesional. Esto coincide con estudios previos del uso de los elementos de ESP en la enseñanza de inglés para activar el proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje. Se concluye que los docentes necesitan utilizar metodologías y técnicas apropiadas para facilitar el proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje.Item Open Access DEVELOPMENT OF ENGLISH READING SKILLS IN STUDENTS OF FIRST LEVEL AT “LA INMACULADA” HIGH SCHOOL IN ESMERALDAS(Ecuador - PUCESE- Escuela de Lingüística Aplicada, 2019-08-07) Zamora Palacios, JanellaReading is a fundamental skill that students should develop in the teaching-learning process of English Language. With the purpose to analyze the English Reading skills process in senior students of the first level at “La Inmaculada” High School in Esmeraldas, a descriptive, qualitative-quantitative investigation was done with the use of the methods of analysis, synthesis and hermeneutics. The techniques of observation and survey were applied to seventy students and three English teachers of the referred institution. The methods of analysis and synthesis and statistics, were used with the technique of survey; the readers participated in the different activities according to their level of study; although some of them mentioned that mechanical reading does not attract much their attention. Learners decided to participate and develop this skill through games, presentations, exercises. The results revealed that most of the students do not like to read, they consider that it is boring, it is not interesting, and they confess not to know how to read analytically. The percentages clearly show that students do not like literature, fiction or romantic books; they have their preferences. In addition, the results showed that students read in a limited way; they accept that reading helps them to develop different activities in the use of other skills
