Item Open Access IMPROVING ENGLISH LISTENING SKILLS IN THE TENTH YEAR STUDENTS OF BASIC EDUCATION AT “ELOY ALFARO” HIGH SCHOOL IN ESMERALDAS THROUGHOUT THE 2012-2013 SCHOOL YEAR.(2013) Cruzatty Montano, AndreaEsta investigación presenta información relacionada con el estudio de cómo la destreza de “listening” se puede mejorar y por lo tanto beneficiar a los procesos de enseñanza de inglés. La mencionada investigación se realizó en el año 2012 en el paralelo "A" y "B" del 10º año de educación básica en el colegio “Eloy Alfaro” en la provincia de Esmeraldas. El propósito de esta investigación fue conocer el origen y las causas del lento desarrollo y las pocas las habilidades auditivas de los estudiantes antes mencionados. Para ello, fue necesario obtener información relacionada a cómo los alumnos se sienten y cómo los profesores realizan sus clases, así como también el nivel de conocimientos y dominio de habilidades que tienen. Tanto los estudiantes, docentes y autoridades participaron compartiendo sus experiencias con respecto a las preguntas basadas en el tema de la investigación. Es importante mencionar que toda la población de los estudiantes antes mencionados realizó la encuesta correspondiente la cual sirvió para recoger la información respectiva. Además, la metodología utilizada se basó en referencias bibliográficas y en la investigación de campo también. La información obtenida se analizó, en comparación con los supuestos teóricos, y luego conclusiones y recomendaciones fueron establecidas, que por lo general muestran la relación entre el origen y los efectos del problema, teniendo en cuenta los resultados obtenidos, que muestran que el proceso de enseñanza se ve afectado por la existencia de algunas situaciones relacionadas con: el escaso conocimiento metodológico, la falta de materiales didácticos, y el no tan sólido dominio de las habilidades comunicativas. Por lo tanto, es necesario mejorar estos aspectos de modo que el proceso de enseñanza del Inglés pueda llevarse a cabo apropiadamente.Item Open Access How a Language Laboratory Improves the Teaching-Learning Process in the “San Rafael” Salesian Technical High School of Esmeraldas City in 2013(2014) Medina Mariduena, Xiomara ElizabethThe purpose of this study was to express how language laboratories offer a huge variety of language-learning services and facilities. The language laboratory is a great technological environment for imparting skills in English; which offers the most practical activities to intensify the English language learning process. Also, it provides an increasingly sophisticated range of functions that have been designed to change or better certain aspects of traditional classroom language teaching. A descriptive and co-relational design was used to examine the relationships among two study variables, which are a) The language laboratories and b) English Language Teaching. This study supported that these variables can improve the English level of the students as long as they both are used correctly with the right methodologies and techniques. Moreover, some surveys were used to learn how much the students would like to study in a language lab. Also, four teachers were interviewed to identify if it is really necessary to teach with the help of an English Laboratory. All of these research results showed me that the laboratories of English are really important in the current language education system.Item Open Access Evaluation of the Educational System in the Applied Linguistics School: Teaching of English in the Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador in Esmeraldas(2014-10) Guerrero Rodriguez, SolangeEvaluación del Sistema Educativo en la Escuela de Lingüística Aplicada mención Enseñanza de Inglés en la Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador sede Esmeraldas. El Inglés es una Lengua global y existe una demanda de profesores excelentes, capacitados y calificados para enfrentar los problemas educativos en nuestra ciudad. La Escuela de Lingüística Aplicada es una de las nuevas carreras en la Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador sede Esmeraldas y el presente trabajo de investigación fue desarrollado a fin de establecer dónde ésta necesita mejorar: estrategias metodológicas, técnicas y destrezas de los estudiantes. El propósito de esta investigación no fue enfocarse en las debilidades de la Escuela, el personal docente, estudiantes o autoridades; el propósito es optimizar las opciones para resolver algunos problemas que estuvieron y aun están presentes en La Escuela de Lingüística Aplicada. Para obtener los resultados, se aplicaron encuestas a estudiantes de diferentes niveles y entrevistas para profesores de la Escuela, donde fueron verificados el nivel de Inglés de los estudiantes, la metodología usada por los profesores y las oportunidades académicas para los estudiantes a fin de mejorar sus destrezas y cómo éstas (las destrezas) afectan su preparación para ser profesionales. Fue posible determinar que en La Escuela de Lingüística Aplicada se necesita aplicar nuevas técnicas para ayudar a los estudiantes a desarrollar, fortalecer la confianza y sus habilidades lingüísticas, al menos, en las dos más importantes que son Speaking and Listening porque solo el 12% del 100% de los estudiantes tiene fortalecida la destreza de Speaking, así mismo, el 13% con la destreza de Listening.Item Open Access Selection of English Teachers to enter the teaching profession in Esmeraldas city schoolyear 2013-2014(2014-10) Dominguez Mejia, Elva TatianaThe purpose of this research is to know the processes of appropriated selection of English education professionals; in Esmeraldas, Ecuador to enter the teaching profession. The appropriate process of selection provides qualified teachers to give quality of teaching. Also, the purpose is to know that the appropriate selection provides the opportunity to demonstrate teacher’s abilities, qualities, and subjectivity in the policies of the process of English teacher selection. The analytic and descriptive design was used to investigate the relationships between the two studied variables: (1) selection of the English teacher and (2) teaching profession. This study of these two variables was carried out through analytical reading, interview, survey, and observation. This allowed confirming the existing selection of EFL teacher so as to enhance the quality of teaching of EFL. Besides, the research results demonstrated that the current English teacher selection guarantees transparency and quality. 100 % of teachers involved in the research accepted that the present English teacher selection is adequate and that the only impairment is the mandatory TOEFL test that does not allow teachers get the appointment in a sufficient number.Item Open Access Motivatión in the classroom: How students motivation affects their learning(2014-11-18) Estupinan Boboy, Edith MargaritaThis study adopted a quantitative method to discover PUCESE students' opinion about their own motivation to learn English. Dörnyei's motivational framework was used to investigate PUCESE students' motivation to learn English, but an additional component was included: parent-specific motivation. The items to form the questionnaire were chosen from the Wong (2007) Questionnaire, and it was taken by 70 PUCESE General English students. Statistically speaking, this study found that the professor is the most significant factor affecting PUCESE students' motivation to learn English in General English Classes. On the other hand, parents are not statistically important, but they play a central role in supporting PUCESE students', economically or affectively. Finally, PUCESE students affirmed that they have an instrumental value to learn English, which is a key for accelerating academic and career success.Item Open Access Creación de un CD para enseñar gramática: el uso de IN-ON-AT”(2015-04-09) Rodas Luque, Maria JoseThis study has as its main objective to create an innovative and modern material, applying some approaches of second language acquisition and different language methods. The chosen topic to create the material was the use of in, on, and at. The reason for this focus is that these prepositions are words used daily, and can be confusing for English language learners. These misunderstandings are due to interference errors and the lack of knowledge about the use of these prepositions. The creation of this material takes into account theories about second language acquisition, language teaching methods, teachers and learners’ characteristics, and how they are related. Also, it describes the use of technology, especially CALL and multimedia. The first one mentions how people use computers to learn a language. The second one, multimedia, explains how combining different elements (texts, sounds, images videos) makes the creation of the CD possible. The resulting CD is based on the idea that repetition helps students to use the language automatically. Also, it uses different teaching methods and activities. In summary, the results obtained in the questionnaire applied to English teachers in Esmeraldas, show that the CD could give positive outcomes if it is used in the classroomItem Open Access Inglés para fines específicos: una guía de inglés técnico para estudiantes del 6to nivel de inglés general en la carrera de Comercio Exterior en la PUCESE 2014(2015-04-09) Vasquez Santamaria, Diana CarolinaThis study follows the steps of the scientific method to test the effect of creating and applying a Technical English guideline for 6th level General English students in the International Business career at PUCESE. Some students from the above-mentioned career were asked about their opinion regarding the teaching of Technical English related to their profession. Most of the students polled said they would like to learn this branch of English in order to increase their Business English vocabulary. Based on the above results, the guideline was applied through an 18-hour course focused on English for Academic and Occupational Purposes (EAOP). It is part of English for Specific Purposes (ESP), which is a sphere of teaching English language that takes into account the learners’ language needs. The guideline content was taught through the application of the Task-based Language Learning (TBLL) method, which focuses on meaning rather than forms of the language. The results collected after applying the guideline showed these students had the opportunity to improve their Technical English knowledge, since they said all their expectations regarding the content (vocabulary) and the methodology were covered during the course period. Finally, it can be said that the creation and application of the ESP based guideline had a positive effect on the participants, who were able to learn the English language related to their professional career.Item Open Access Teaching english with the ludic methodology to children in the second basic grade at "Velasco Ibarra School" in Esmeraldas city Ecuador(2015-06-24) Estupinan Jaramillo, Evelin DayanaThough efforts have been made by the Ministry of Education concerning the introduction of English Teaching in the Ecuadorian school at all levels, the English teachers of the Second Basic Grade at “Velasco Ibarra” school, Esmeraldas city, Ecuador, have some methodological difficulties that make it hard to carry out the teaching learning process successfully. The purpose of this investigation was to propose a handbook with games to improve the English Language Learning of students from the level referred. A diagnosis of the problem was made by means of observation and surveys applied to students and teachers, during the academic year 2013-2014. After computing the results, a handbook with games was designed based on the learning needs of the students and the methodological difficulties of the teachers. The games were designed carefully, matching the content units of the textbook for Second Graders, and taking into consideration the didactic components, principles and laws. Precise methodological orientations were also designed for the English Teachers to work with the handbook in order to achieve good results. The handbook allows an increase of interaction, motivation, stimulation, and activation of learning. Besides, it helps the students develop the four principal abilities of the English language by means of fun and pleasant situations that are adequate for children.Item Open Access Effects of audio-visual materials on the listening skills directed to students of the ninth year of educación general básica at “Atahualpa” high school in Atacames canton scholl year 2014-2015(2015-08-03) Velez Bustos, Natalia JomayraThe main objective of this thesis report was focused on the effect of audiovisual material on the listening skill of the ninth year of basic education at "Atahualpa" high school in Atacames group "A" and "B". Using Group "A" to see the effect of audio-visual material and group "B" as a control group to compare which of both techniques work better on the students. A total of 75 students from the school "ATAHUALPA" were administered in order to apply a pre- test. After that, one month of audio-visual classes and traditional technique were applied to students and finally a post-test was applied. The pre-test instrument was constructed by the researcher based on “A Class School of English Placement Test B” in order to know the English level of the students. Moreover, the test consisted of 30 items comprised of multiple choice and easy questions. After that, during one moth the group “A” was involved in a class taught by the researcher using the traditional technique as it is known using their English book as a support for each class. On the other hand, the group “B” was used as control group teaching them their classes with audio-visual materials. The same topics were taught to both group “A” and ”B” in order to see the effect of using audio-visual materials and to compare which of both techniques work better on the second language learning. Lastly, the post-test was applied at the end of the month of the classes based on 20 items comprised of multiple choice and easy questions in order to see the student’s English progress. It is necessary to indicate that the implementation of the above mentioned strategy is essential for the development of a significant and interactive learning to the students allowing them to catch an active teaching learning- process.Item Open Access Intrinsic and extrinsic motivation: which are the types of motivation that students from first year of baccaulareate of accounting and informatics specialties at “Margarita Cortés” public high school experience when they learn english as a second language?(Ecuador: PUCESE - Escuela de Lingüística Aplicada, 2015-09-21) Saltos Intriago, María FernandaThe present study had like main purpose to determine which were the types of motivation (Extrinsic and Intrinsic) that students from First Year of Baccalaureate of Accounting and Informatics specialties from Margarita Cortés experienced when they learned English as a second language? To achieve this purpose a survey based on the Attitude and Motivation test battery from Gardner was adapted to 58 participants from a public Institution of Esmeraldas called Margarita Cortes High School. The results of the study showed that students experienced an extrinsic motivation to learn this language. Also, it must be emphasized that even though the type of motivation most experienced was the extrinsic the intrinsic also obtained a high percentage which were not separated by such a large gap.Item Open Access Bilingualism: Main Problems in Article Choice by Children Learning English as a Second Language(Ecuador: PUCESE - Escuela de Lingüística Aplicada, 2015-10-12) Makarian Palazian, María KrikorThe aim of this research was to define what bilingualism is and to describe the advantages and disadvantages that children have during the process of learning a second language. Data was collected through an interview applied to teachers in order to get information about their background and the methodologies they use. Also, an interview and a test were applied to students in order to diagnose their use of the language and their knowledge about articles. The investigation was carried out at “Don Bosco” Fiscomisional School in Esmeraldas. The sample was made up by 6 teachers and 114 students of the mentioned school. Results showed that half of teachers have an academic degree. According to results, teachers think that grammar is the most appropriate and significant skill that students need to become bilingualism and they considered that practicing the speaking is the best way to lead bilingualism. According to students’ answers, most of them did not have any relatives who manage the target language, and almost half of them do not know how to use the articles. It was recommended that teachers should attend more seminars to learn about new methodology trends to apply bilingualism in the school in order to help students improve their knowledge about English articles.Item Open Access Problems in understanding and using idiomatic expressions of efl students from the highest levels of general english at PUCESE in 2014(Ecuador: PUCESE - Escuela de Lingüística Aplicada, 2015-10-14) Yánez Chillambo, Tatiana ElizabethThis research dealt with the understanding and using of idiomatic expressions, and difficulties encountered by EFL (English as a foreign language) learners. This study was focused on students from the highest levels of General English at PUCESE, who were asked to complete a questionnaire. The findings of this study were divided into three categories in order to identify and analyze the level of difficulty students have in the comprehension, learning and using of idioms. The questionnaire was designed to analyze the three factors of idiom comprehension; familiarity, semantic transparency, and context of idioms. The participants were presented with ten idioms in a written text with a multiple choice task to check their familiarity with idioms in English. In the semantic transparency test, students were given some common idioms with figurative meaning to translate into Spanish. In the context test, students were given seven idiomatic expressions into sentences that must be translated into Spanish according to the context. And at the end, the participants were asked about their knowledge and interest on learning the expressions presented before, without let them know that those were idioms. Moreover, teachers were needed to get information about the importance of learning and using idioms. Accordingly, when idioms are presented to EFL students, they cannot identify and comprehend them with facility. In this way, it was possible to demonstrate the level of difficulty EFL learners have with the understanding and using of idioms and how it is possible to overcome it.Item Open Access Teaching english vocabulary through multimedia to 1st year students in the computer science baccalaureate program at the Inmaculada high school in Esmeraldas city 2015(Ecuador - PUCESE- Escuela de Lingüística Aplicada mención Inglés, 2015-10-29) Castellanos Nájera, Cristian EduardoThis research follows the steps of the experimental method to evaluate the effect of teaching vocabulary in the English language using technology instead of traditional teaching of the same language. The research is directed towards the 1st year students in the Computer Science baccalaureate belonging to the "Immaculada" High School. The opinions of some students of the aforementioned career on teaching English vocabulary related to his/her profession was gathered through surveys and discussion. Most models surveyed students agreed that they would like to learn English by using computers and internet technology in order to increase their vocabulary. Based on the above results, the program was established through 12 hours of classes based on English vocabulary teaching using laboratories with computers, internet as and other technological elements. The content of the class was taught with the methodology based on learning exercises, which focuses on the meaning of words rather than the rules of the language. The results obtained after application of the classes showed that students had the opportunity to increase their knowledge of English vocabulary, since they expressed that all of their expectations concerning the content (vocabulary) and methodology were reached during the class periods. Finally, it can be said that the creation and implementation of the classes based on technological elements had a positive effect on the participants, who were able to learn the proposed vocabulary in a comfortable manner and related to their career.Item Open Access ANALYSIS OF THE MOST COMMOM WORDS CALLED “FALSE FRIENDS” OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE THAT INTERFERE THE STUDENTS’ READING UNDERSTANDING AT PUCESE(Ecuador - PUCESE- Escuela de Lingüística Aplicada mención Inglés, 2016-02-02) Guevara Loor, Daniel IsraelThe words called "cognate" are found in different parts and languages around the world, knowing that their spelling and meaning look similar. Besides, they can help students with a wide range of vocabulary and reading comprehension tasks. However, it should be noted that words that seem alike, which are called false friends, require special attention: they have different meanings in all contexts. This research, which is based on cognates and false friends, focus on classifying, identifying and understanding the origin of such words and establishing how they have affected students in recent years in learning English as a foreign language. This study is qualitative and quantitative in order to get a comprehensive illustration of the difficulties encountered by students of the Catholic University in the city of Esmeraldas, who in some cases try to understand texts in English, but most are confused by certain words in the language known as "false friends." In order to complete the work on the identification of cognates and false-friends words, a diagnosis was preceded on the students’ knowledge regarding this issue, through a survey directed to all students of different careers at PUCESE. The main principal objective of this study was to determine what are the most common words called false friends of the English language that interfere the students’ reading understanding at PUCESE. The results showed that false friends that are derived from linguistics reciprocity and partly ignored by students are a major problem in their reading understanding. Based on the results, some conclusions were provided and some recommendations were given to both teachers and students of General English at PUCESE to handle such a problem. The results allowed the design of an educational material for learning English that will benefit the students.Item Open Access Do corpora benefit the level of vocabulary of 10th year of basic education students? case study in don Bosco Educational Institution in Esmeraldas, 2015-2016(Ecuador - PUCESE- Escuela de Lingüística Aplicada mención Inglés, 2016-02-03) Castillo Jaén, Sindy JanethThe low level in English classes leads to the need of looking for alternatives of new techniques and methodologies that help to solve this issue. The present case study aims at investigating the benefits that corpus (or its plural corpora) can provide to school classes in Esmeraldas, Ecuador. Through a period of one month, paper material based on information taken from a corpus will be applied in a 10th level class at a fiscomisional institution in Esmeraldas. This is an experimental type of study that used mainly quantitative methods for the analysis of class documents and questionnaires, in order to explore students respond and perceptions to corpus. Also, a pre-test and post-test will be carried out in two classes, one in which the corpus will be applied (treatment group) and the other one which will continue with its regular learning process (control group), in order to know the level of students regarding vocabulary pre- and post the treatment period. So that later, through a comparison between the results of both groups and the analysis of a survey, be able to state the benefits that the use of corpus could bring to the English teaching field. The findings indicate that, despite its short time of implementation, the use of corpus in classes provides improvement in the vocabulary level of students.Item Open Access Learning foreing language through vocabulary: the most adequate vocabulary learning strategies of 10 th level students of educacion general basica at Angelo Patry School in Quinindè school year: 2015-2016(Ecuador - PUCESE- Escuela de Lingüística Aplicada mención Inglés, 2016-02-04) Zamora Nazareno, María JoséThe present study examined the most adequate vocabulary learning strategies of 10th level students at Angelo Patry School to learn new words. To achieve this purpose 20 students or participants were present in 10 English lessons during 5 weeks, and 20 hours class; where they learned different strategies to acquire vocabulary. In each class students learned vocabulary that they use in their daily life for example: Frequency adverbs, parts of a house, sequence words, members of the family, places in the city, prepositions of location, clothes and so on. Subsequently they answered a questionnaire of five questions, which was fundamental to determine which Vocabulary Learning Strategies they prefer for learning new words. The mean score indicated that the use of pictures and dictionaries are the vocabulary learning strategies preferred by this group of students. It means that these strategies are the most effective or adequate for them in the moment to acquire vocabulary to communicate with other people, because these strategies enable a fast connection with the meaning of the unknown words, besides they are available for them, and they are easy to get. Also, it must be emphasized that according to the results there are others vocabulary learning strategies that had a low score, but they also permit the understanding of words and their meaning to learn a second language.Item Open Access MOTIVATION IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF ORAL LANGUAGE IN TENTH BASIC YEAR STUDENTS AT UNIDAD EDUCATIVA FISCOMISIONAL SALESIANA “MARÍA AUXILIADORA”, IN ESMERALDAS CITY, ECUADOR. 2014-2015(Ecuador - PUCESE- Escuela de Lingüística Aplicada, 2016-04-05) Farías Bonilla, Cristina DayanaTo communicate orally in the English language is a great necessity to people all over the world, so the knowledge of this language is highly pertinent for teenage students in the city of Esmeraldas in Ecuador, because of the necessity to communicate with other people for the fact that this is a touristic city, also the very many opportunities given to them in offering jobs, so it is a very difficult task for teachers of high schools to have them highly motivated. A design of investigation is presented, using theoretical and empirical methods, which easily permitted to determine the theoretical background which supported it. The diagnosis allowed to corroborate the scientific problem of the investigation, which was the lack of motivation to learn English of tenth basic year students from Unidad Educativa Fiscomisional Salesiana “María Auxiliadora“, in the city of Esmeraldas in Ecuador, which reflected the low linguistic level they have when they go to universities. These aspects are of a great importance to transform the teaching-learning process, to have 10th level students from the school already mentioned more motivated, so as to get a proper level of oral communication in English and orient the present investigation to elaborate a set of exercises teachers should use in order to get an adequate communication in the students, to foster significant learning which was revealed in the use of different activities such as linguistic games, exercises for the integration of abilities and those for developing abilities in isolation, to get students learn the language significantly and to foster values. The critical evaluation of the results permitted to know the effectiveness of the exercises planned which was evident when transformations and changes occurred in the students’ behavior in respect to the quality of the learning process and the level of motivation in the development of oral language.Item Open Access The effectiveness of games on the development of productive skills of students from 10th year of basic education at Rioverde educational institution in Rioverde canton school year 2014-2015(Ecuador - PUCESE- Escuela de Lingüística Aplicada, 2016-05-06) Wilson, Yeilly YisselleThis report is written based on the job training done by the writer as an English teacher. This report seeks to describe the process of developing productive skills by using games and to describe the effectiveness of using them in the development of the same to the tenth grade students at the Educational Institution Rioverde in Rioverde. Being English an important tool nowadays for different areas of development, is not only the teachers job that is requires here is a group job which includes learners interest, opinion, learning styles, environment, possibilities, likes and dislikes. A series of important things that leads to a better management to have control, teach and learn at the same time in order to reach the goal. The data of this report was collected by observation, interview to teachers, survey to students and the experience when the writer taught English lesson. The observation was done in the class; as a result, the report reveals that applying games in teaching English to the children give some effective benefits, especially in teaching English skills. Although, the point was also, to demonstrate that using games into the classroom leads to; order ideas, give importance to learners’ opinions and the predisposition as same as motivation to work and learn at the same time. More to the point, it gives the teacher the opportunity to be attentive on what works better and what not as it help to order, evaluate and check were any problem can result without planning before. Finally, as teaching English skills to the young learners is very important, the writer can say that, the idea was caught, the learners demonstrate interest, pleasant and means for learning using games, and to affirm that, Game is the effective method to be applied in the English class.Item Open Access Improving the ability of speaking in second year baccalaureate students from organizational secretariat management at “Margarita Cortes” Educational Institutionin Esmeraldas City 2014-2015(Ecuador - PUCESE- Escuela de Lingüística Aplicada, 2016-07-01) Bolaños Valencia, Maira AlejandraThe teaching of the English Language has had difficulties in the different levels of Education in Ecuador, so the teachers of English in the senior second- year students from Organizational Secretariat Management at “Margarita Cortés” Educational Institution in the city of Esmeraldas have had methodological difficulties for the teaching of this language. The purpose of this research was to design a set of exercises to improve the ability of speaking in these students. A diagnosis was performed through a survey which was applied to teachers during the Academic Course 2014-2015.After getting the results, a group of exercises were designed, to contribute to the improvement of the ability of speaking in these students, and the methodology to teach the exercises. The exercises designed were integrated to those of the text book used by the students. The exercises improved the ability of speaking in the mentioned students, a meaningful learning was developed during the lessons, the students and the teachers were motivated to do the exercises, the teachers were updated prepared in the teaching of this ability. There have been studies that demonstrate how English learners have developed their speaking skills through the technique of drama. By means of the author´s pre-professional practice, it was identified that teachers from “Alfonso Quiñonez George” Educational Institution do not have enough methodological resources to activate their lessons and motivate their students so that they can improve their oral skills. This is why the purpose of this investigation was to propose a didactic material based on the dramatization of realistic situations in the practice of the English Language in order to improve the students´ spoken English. A diagnosis of the students´ learning needs and the teachers´ methodological difficulties was done through the use of the technique of observation of the English Language teaching process, and a survey applied to teachers of English in the referred educational institution during the academic year 2014-2015. After computing the results, a booklet was designed with activities based on the use of drama. This booklet allows to increase interaction between students, motivation and stimulation of oral skills.
