Item Open Access Comunicación alternativa para atender las necesidades especiales en tiempos de COVID-19 Caso: Estudiantes con discapacidad física en la ciudad de Ibarra(Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador Ibarra, 2022-08) Ricci Noguera, Cristina ElizabethThe COVID 19 pandemic generated important changes in education due to the fact that face-to-face education was replaced by virtual education, showing economic, social and technological gaps. Adaptation to these changes required a 180° turn where the use of ICT helped to maintain communication with students to continue education. The research presented analyzed the role of alternative communication in the learning processes of students with physical disabilities. The study had a mixed explorative-descriptive methodology and was used as data collection techniques: in-depth interviews and surveys. The population included students with physical disabilities between 7 and 12 years of age who are in 4th to 7th grade of elementary school in educational institutions in the city of Ibarra. The sample was non probabilistic but of a specific and voluntary intentional sample with 72 participants. The topic was discussed with psychologists, teachers and parents who witnessed and participated in the integration of children with disabilities into the virtual world during the COVID 19 pandemic. Preliminary results show that virtuality allowed children with physical disabilities to feel integrated within the virtual hours because: a) curricular adaptations were made for all students, b) the physical spaces where children with physical disabilities developed were in their homes and c) participation within the class hours was virtual; then physical disability was not an obstacle for participation and interaction because they were just a click away from their computer to interact within virtuality.
