Item Metadata only The influence of the L1 (Spanish) on the L2 (English) language learning in a rural school(PUCE - Esmeraldas, 2020) Lema Ortiz, John JairoIn order to analyze how the L1 (Spanish) affects the L2 (English) language learning in nineth graders of Aurelia Becerra de Quiñonez” rural school in Rioverde, Esmeraldas Province, Ecuador, a qualitative-quantitative investigation of a descriptive type was carried out using the analytic-synthetic and hermeneutic methods with the techniques of interview, observation and a test, which were applied to a sample of eight students, three Spanish teachers, and three English teachers from the referred school. The results revealed that all of the students had serious structural, lexical and pronunciation problems in English. In relation to the writing ability, they presented insufficiencies due to the fact that most of them were not able to write the paragraph requested, they even failed in Spanish, which revealed their lack of knowledge in both languages. In addition, some of the words that they wrote in Spanish were misspelled. One of the main factors for those problems was the lack of vocabulary, because they confused words that were similar in both languages, another problem was the structural borrowing from one language to another, showing lack of knowledge of the different classes of words, which was also present in Spanish. The subject-verb relationship was another problem, as they were not able to recognize when a subject was singular or plural and the correct use of positive and negative verbs. The investigation really showed the influence of the L1 (Spanish) on the L2 (English) language learning mainly because of linguistic interference that made students make frequent mistakes.Item Metadata only Descriptive analysis of cohesive devices use in academic writing by English teachers and its influence on coherence(PUCE - Esmeraldas, 2020) Medina Maridueña, Xiomara ElizabethTesis previa obtención del título de Magister en Pedagogía del Inglés como Lengua ExtranjeraItem Metadata only The relationship between cultural identity and accent in learners of English as a foreign language(PUCE - Esmeraldas, 2020) Toro Reina, Valeria PaolaTesis previa obtención del título de Magister en Pedagogía del Inglés como Lengua ExtranjeraItem Metadata only Communicative language teaching strategies to develop senior high school students’ English language speaking skill(PUCE - Esmeraldas, 2020) Rengifo Obando, Marlene ElizabethTo analyze the use of Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) strategies to develop the English -speaking skill, a qualitative investigation was carried out at Don Bosco High School in Esmeraldas by using the analytical – synthetical, hermeneutic, deductive and inductive methods. This research was applied to 105 students from senior education. The observation and survey were the techniques applied to collect information. The observation process revealed that teachers use strategies to develop speaking; however, everything was translated into Spanish to help the students understand the instructions. On the other hand, the survey results from learners and teachers revealed that teachers apply the CLT methodology as well as some activities to improve communication like role-plays and oral presentations. This study concludes that teachers know about the theory, techniques, strategies, processes, and methods to teach the speaking skill. However, they do not apply them properly. The methods of investigation used were the analytic-synthetic, inductive-deductive, and hermeneutics with the technique of the survey. The results revealed that teachers of rural areas mostly used cooperative, direct, and traditional teaching strategies. It was also shown that the teaching-learning process was mainly teacher-centered because most of the activities were developed around the teachers’ interests. Some humanistic elements such as collaborative learning and freedom at choosing the topic that students want to learn were occasionally applied in the English language teaching-learning process and finally, actions and procedures rooted in the principles of the humanistic approach were implemented in the proposed didactic strategy which consisted of five stages: preplanning, activation of previous knowledge, learning immersion, feedback and community’s involvement. To sum up, even though some rural teachers’ teaching practices may be focused on certain humanistic principles, it did not imply that they had a broad knowledge about the humanistic approach that enable them to create humanistic based didactic guidelines to be followed in the rural students’ English language learning.Item Metadata only A didactic strategy to teach English to slow learners(PUCE - Esmeraldas, 2020) Tenorio Merchán, Carla YasnaiaTesis previa obtención del título de Magister en Pedagogía del Inglés como Lengua ExtranjeraItem Open Access

The uses of technology in the English learning process through online and virtual modes in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic(PUCE - Esmeraldas, 2021) Russo, Carlos HumbertoIn order to characterize the use of technology by English teachers in Esmeraldas through online and virtual classes during the Covid- 19 pandemic period in 2020, a mixed- type (Quan/ qual) descriptive investigation was carried out with a population of 30 English teachers who were doing the Master's Program of Pedagogy of English as a Foreign Language at the PUCE Esmeraldas campus in the year 2020. The sample coincided with the population. The methods of investigation utilized were the analytical- synthetical, inductive- deductive and hermeneutics, and the techniques used were a survey and an interview. The results revealed that teachers mostly use Question and Answers, Exercises and Continuous Practice as teaching techniques. It was also found out that most of the teachers use Kahoot and Quizizz as assessment tools, the most frequent applications teachers use are Padlet and Edmodo, which provide a easy way for teachers and students use it in a free manner, anytime and anywhere, whereas the most widely used platforms to teach their lessons in a synchronous and asynchronous way are Zoom, Teams and Moodle. Based on the results, it can be determined that teachers during the time of the pandemic have combined traditional teaching techniques with the use of information and communication technologies (ICT), using different types of platforms and applications to ensure that the teaching-learning processes are carried out.Item Metadata only The use of the task-based approach to improve senior high school students’ oral communicative skills(PUCE - Esmeraldas, 2021) Andrade Sánchez, Carla AlejandraTo design a task-based didactic strategy to teach English to senior high school students at Don Bosco High School in Esmeraldas, a descriptive qualitative investigation was carried out in the year 2020, with a population of 11 teachers of senior high school students. The deductive-inductive, hermeneutics methods and analysis and synthesis were used, with the application of a survey. The results revealed that most of the teachers present a lack of knowledge related to the use of task-based activities in order to teach and develop oral communication skills. Also teachers do not have enough didactic materials to teach the mentioned skills at Don Bosco School in Esmeraldas. In addition, a great number of students present different difficulties when communicating orally in the English language. So, teachers have the necessity to use task-based didactic activities to teach oral communication skills. For that reason, there cannot be a better way to involve students than designing and imparting task-based didactic activities which can be carried out during the English class. Therefore, assuming that the Task-Based Approach (TBA) can be an effective method to teach English oral communicative skills, the researcher investigated the effectiveness of this approach and designed a strategy with the main stages: pre-task, task-cycle, and task focus – post task.
