Abstract
To analyze the use of cohesive devices and its influence on academic writing by teachers of English in Esmeraldas city a qualitative investigation of an exploratory scope was carried out with twenty of teachers of English who participated in the Super English Conference at PUCESE in 2019. The sampling method used was probability and the technique was an exploratory essay in which an analytic rubric that was designed, taking as reference IELTS’ rubric, to evaluate accurately the collected data. Later, the data was analyzed statistically. The principal findings of this research identified that most teachers of English in Esmeraldas city overuse, misuse, or omit the use of cohesive devices, for example, conjunctions, collocations, reiteration, references which negatively affect the quality of coherence in their writing. These findings corroborate the results of an extensive number of previous works in cohesion and coherence in academic writing. In addition, these data support teachers of English need to enhance their writing skills and teach writing as a process. Otherwise, it can be said that their students will never be able to write properly and they will always fail in international proficiency exams. The research results can provide insight into one of the reasons why a considerable number of teachers of English do not have a B2 language proficiency certificate. One issue with the current study was that teachers were not fully committed to writing down the expository essay. Consequently, these results may not be applicable to all situations. Although the current study is based on a small sample of participants, the findings suggest that teachers need to increase the vocabulary repertoire and improve their writing skills, specifically, at text level.
