Item Open Access Transparencia de la información pública en los medios impresos: análisis y comparación en el Ecuador(Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador Sede Ibarra, 2019-09) Barranco Rodríguez, CamilaTransparency is a concept that has been progressively developed over the years, since Jeremy Bentham, an English philosopher, and writer, used the term for the first time. Currently, it can be seen from various perspectives, as a mechanism to prevent corruption, or as a tool that improves the quality of democracy and citizen participation. Several authors and global organizations deciphered the relevance of the issue and dedicated its work to contribute in the search for societies that transparent their public information, not only at the government level but in a more general space where all public and private companies and institutions are included. Between these entities are the print media, which despite all the efforts and legislation in this area, still do not fully comply with the laws, and besides, don't allow the flawless exercise of the rights of participation and social control. Hence, the purpose of this research is to analyze the transparency of public information in the print media of Ecuador, through the general knowledge about the journalist of the media in question, as well as through the analysis of economic data and institutions that appear on their websites. The two techniques used in this research, structured interviews applied to sixteen journalists, and the analysis of 40 indicators divided into three blocks, allowed establishing a transparency ranking of the seven media studied. Although none of the media reached a score higher than 50, El Universo obtained the highest. As a consequence of the present research, the mentioned media is the one that performs a better job by making it's public information more transparent. Besides, it was determined that the main shortcomings of the newspapers analyzed are several, but highlight the lack of knowledge of its professionals on the laws related to transparency, the non-use of its webs and social networks as tools to spread public data. Also, the process of laws applying are not being kept, and the regulation is deficient. Finally, it was also determined that the areas with the lowest level of transparency are the institutional and the economic, but also the published data are not accessible and understandable for every audience.
