Abstract
The present study aimed to determine the level of physical activity and indicators of sedentary behavior among legislative staff aged 30 to 60 years at the National Assembly of Ecuador. A quantitative, descriptive, and cross-sectional design was used, carried out between January and March 2025. A finite population sample size calculation (N=135) resulted in n≈100; the final sample was n=100 (response rate 74.1%). Data were collected using the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ, Spanish version). The results showed that 41% of participants were overweight and 27% were obese, increasing the risk of non-communicable chronic diseases. Only 17% met the recommendation for vigorous activity and 16% for moderate activity, while 52% reported walking for at least 10 minutes on five or more days per week. However, 34% remained seated for eight or more hours per day, reflecting a high level of sedentary behavior. Logistic regression analysis indicated that vigorous physical activity acts as a protective factor against sedentary behavior. In conclusion, there is a high prevalence of excess weight and sedentary behaviors; it is recommended to implement active breaks and institutional physical activity programs in order to reduce risks, improve health, and optimize work productivity.
