Abstract

The general objective was to analyze the influence of secondary criminalization on the construction of stereotypes by research agents and society. Three specific objectives were proposed: to study the theoretical and conceptual elements of stereotype construction and secondary criminalization in Ecuadorian society; to analyze the stereotypes present in Ecuadorian society and their impact on public perception and social coexistence; and to determine whether criminal stereotypes influence the perceptions and actions of security forces. To address these objectives, surveys and interviews were conducted to demonstrate the existence of these biases. The findings revealed a complex interaction between ingrained social stereotypes, discriminatory practices on the part of the authorities, and the consolidation of a culture of distrust and stigmatization towards a certain ethnic group. The conclusion of the study underlines that stereotypes significantly affect the actions of research agents and social coexistence in Ecuador. It was identified that Ecuadorian society has deeply rooted stereotypes, especially pointing to Afro descendants as criminals, which influences police practices and reinforces these prejudices influencing secondary criminalization based on the construction of stereotypes.
