Abstract
Breast milk is the first and crucial source of nourishment for ensuring the good health and growth of children because it provides all the energy and nutrients they need in their early months of life. It covers more than half of their nutritional needs during the first year and up to a third during the second year. Therefore, this study is essential to promote maternal and child health. Breastfeeding is a fundamental pillar for infant health and growth, supplying all the necessary nutrients during the early years of life. This study focuses on assessing the knowledge and breastfeeding techniques among first-time adolescent mothers in the Gynecology Department of San Luis Hospital in Otavalo, from October 2023 to February 2024. A descriptive study with a quantitative approach was conducted, involving seventeen adolescent mothers hospitalized in the gynecology service. Through a 16-question survey, sociodemographic characteristics and knowledge about breastfeeding (BF) were evaluated. The results revealed that 23.5% of the surveyed mothers were 19 years old, the majority (52.9%) were in common-law relationships, and 47.1% had a paying job. Most mothers were of mixed race and Ecuadorian nationality. Although adolescent mothers demonstrated an understanding of the importance of exclusive breastfeeding, it was found that they lacked knowledge of breastfeeding techniques. In conclusion, it is crucial to deepen the knowledge of these mothers regarding breastfeeding and related topics to prevent the abandonment of exclusive breastfeeding and promote healthy infant feeding.
