Brazilian and Ecuadorian social media users: a study of knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs toward organ donation

Epidemiological profile of patients on a single waiting list and donors for a kidney transplant in a hospital in Quito, Ecuador
(2021-09) Lima Dos Santos, Sueny Paloma; Pullas Tapia, Gonzalo Javier; Lima dos Santos, Sueny Paloma
Background. In Ecuador, it is estimated that more than eight hundred people are on the waiting list for organ transplants. For this reason, the aim of this study is to describe the epidemiological profile of patients on the waiting list and donor for a kidney transplant. Methods. A cross-sectional retrospective study was performed on 67 patients who underwent transplants between 2012 and 2019. We included recipients of organs from both deceased and living donors. Age of patients and donors, period in which they underwent dialysis until the transplant, type of donor, cause of chronic kidney failure, comorbidities, type of dialysis, cold ischemia time, blood-type of donors and patients, compatibility, complications after transplant, delayed graft function, and immunosuppression, were studied. Results. A total of 45 patients were male, with age 46.80 ± 11.48 years old. Twenty-two were females, with age of 40.45 ± 12.9 years old. The mean age of the donor was 40.71 ± 13.28 years old. 55.2% of the etiology to develop CKD in patients was unknown. The second most prevalent were diabetic nephropathy and lupus nephritis, both of which registered 7.5%. Furthermore, 92.4% received kidneys from deceased donors, and the mean age of those recipients was 45.2 ± 13.9 years old. Conversely, only 7.6% had kidneys from living donors. Conclusions. The importance of knowing the epidemiological profile is for health strategies. It can be developed for the medical care of the most vulnerable population within this list, and try to reduce morbidity and mortality.

Knowledge, attitudes and beliefs on organ donation among students and lecturers in Quito, Ecuador
(2020) Lima Dos Santos, Sueny Paloma; Lima dos Santos, Sueny Paloma
Countries have reported that people's attitudes towards organ donation are influenced by knowledge, education and religion. In Ecuador, more than 800 patients are on the waiting list for an organ; likewise, the population does not recognize the importance of the donation. Although, since 2011, the Organic Law of Donation and Transplantation of Organs, Tissues and Cells states that all Ecuadorians are donors, but still, the high number of people on the waiting list is not well understood. The purpose of this study is to determine the factors towards organ donation of students and lecturers of the Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador. This is a cross-sectional study, and the universe was the entire population; however, only 469 (students) and 321 (lecturers) answered, despite our efforts. We applied an anonymously validated questionnaire, and we sent it for five months by email. 89.8% of students and lecturers agreed with the donation; however, 10.2% of the students refused, and 14.6% of lecturers were undecided (p < 0.001). The highest hesitation was found in the age group between 36-64 years (14.2%), while the most refusal was found in the young adult, 9.4%. 40.1% of them alluded to have regular knowledge, while 27.9% claimed to have low knowledge about organ donation (p = 0.016). Based on their opinion, 65.9% said that a person with brain death could not recover, although 26.9% did not know (p = 0.023). 38.9% affirmed they did not know if their religions agreed with the donation. 78.5% claimed the best methods could increase the number of donors is education. Public health in Ecuador does not have sufficient regulations through its state policies that should favour recipients. If each citizen knows that their organs save lives, the waiting list will decrease, and state expenditures will reduce. However, the populations' beliefs are still related to an abuse of authority to donate organs without the consent of relatives. Key messages With better strategies to increase awareness of the importance of organ donation, great results. It will increase survival rates, improve quality of life and decrease health expenses.

New species of leaf-litter toad of the Rhinella margaritifera species group (Anura: Bufonidae) from Amazonia
(2020-12) Lima Dos Santos, Sueny Paloma; Ron Melo, Santiago Rafael; Lima dos Santos, Sueny Paloma
We describe through integrative taxonomy a new Amazonian species of leaf-litter toad of the Rhinella margaritifera species group. The new species inhabits open lowland forest in southwest Amazonia in Brazil, Peru, and Bolivia. It is closely related to a Bolivian species tentatively identified as Rhinella cf. paraguayensis. Both the new species and R. paraguayensis share an uncommon breeding strategy among their Amazonian congeners: each breeds in moderate to large rivers instead of small streams or ponds formed by rainwater. The new species is easily differentiated from other members of the R. margaritifera species group by having a strongly developed bony protrusion at the angle of the jaw, a snout–vent length of 63.4–84.7 mm in females and 56.3–72.3 mm in males, well-developed supratympanic crests with the proximal portion shorter than the parotoid gland in lateral view, a divided distal subarticular tubercle on finger III, and multinoted calls composed of groups of 7–9 pulsed notes and a dominant frequency of 1,012–1,163 Hz. Recent studies have shown that the upper Madeira Basin harbors a megadiverse fauna of anurans, including several candidate species. This is the first member of the R. margaritifera species group to be described from this region in recent years, and at least two additional unnamed species await formal description.

Promoting organ donation on the Twitter platform: an exploratory analysis in Ecuador
(2020-08) Lima Dos Santos, Sueny Paloma; Lima dos Santos, Sueny Paloma
There is a growing discrepancy between the number of organ donors and potential recipients in Ecuador. It is estimated that more than 800 patients are on the waiting list for organs. Likewise, the population does not recognize the importance and benefits of donating, although, since 2011, each Ecuadorian is a donor. This exploratory study is intended to address organ donation as a topic for debate within social networks. For this purpose, Twitter was selected as the platform, primarily because it is actively and internationally related to the political. In Ecuador, there is a direct relationship in politics between visibility on Twitter and acceptance in the polls. Data referring to organ donation were not obtained in this study. It demonstrates that the debate around the subject does not have higher dynamics on Twitter.
