Item Open Access How to improve communication among students in a lenguaje classroom(10/2016) Harutyunyan, Liliya; Harutyunyan, LiliyaAn atmosphere full of conflicts leads to uncertainty; it can even lead to difficulties in relationships and misunderstanding within the group. It is important to mention that in a classroom where there are too many disagreements and unresolved issues, there are problems of self-esteem for some of its members, which may be the cause of aggression towards others and lead to interpersonal conflicts, too. As the environment in the classroom depends on each student and their attitude, as welas a definition of one´s role within the group, a harmonic environment is constructed by collaborative and respectful behavior towards oneself and all others. This project is a design of a program based on empowerment strategies of different pedagogical and psychological influences, aimed to improve interpersonal and intrapersonal relationships in the classroom. The term empowerment in this context is understood as increasing an individual’s inner strength to make changes in their personal lives and their environment. The objective of this project is to achieve a peaceful environment and improve communication in the classroom through empowerment techniques. Empowerment techniques in this project include exercises for students in order to develop their aware ness about the importance of finding their unique role in the group and acting accordingly to search for a specific attitude for each member of the group that will not harm or disturb others; and to learn how to accept others, considering each student’s background. Item Metadata only Peer review: a tool to enhance the quality of academic written productions(2019-04) Harutyunyan, Liliya; Poveda Ávila, María Fernanda; Poveda Ávila, María FernandaHigher education focuses on promoting the training of autonomous, critical professionals who adapt to the ever-more demanding labor market. To achieve these objectives, it is necessary to rethink teaching practices in order to allow the student to be the main actor and modeler for their learning process. Previous studies based on Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory have shown that learning should be treated as a socio-cultural activity. Indeed, according to this approach, individual knowledge is firstly constructed at a social level. Peer review, for its part, is a learning tool based on the sociocultural approach. It allows students to achieve higher levels of autonomy and critical thinking. This research’s aim is, on the one hand, to analyze the effect of peer review on the quality of academic essays and, on the other, to examine the way in which linguistic and communicative competence in academic writing are affected. This experimental study was carried out with 68 level B1 + students (32 men and 36 women) in a private university in Ecuador during one academic year. After the statistical analysis, it is concluded that peer review has a positive impact on academic writing. However, the impact is higher in the communicative competence than in the linguistic competence. This result is aligned with previous research, which shows that students tend to prioritize message over form. Future research should investigate peer review’s long-term impact upon students and their ability to transfer skills acquired in English class to other subjects, or even to professional contexts.Item Open Access Problem-solving speaking activities to develop critical thinking skills in B1 EFL students(PUCE - Quito, 2022-08-01) Encalada Neira, Jenny Marisol; Harutyunyan, LiliyaLearning a second language is among the leading factors in modern-day communities that help unite people from different backgrounds (Mehta & Mehta, 2019). Learners with additional needs are likely to express different levels of understanding of the offered context. Based on the complexity of some languages, it is worth noting that there are unique approaches that can assist the learners in quickly understanding the various aspects of the secondary language. Learners' creativity plays a vital role in determining their connection to the second language. Since some languages differ from the primary languages, teachers can create unique ways that may allow the learners to easily connect some aspects of the language and change their attitude towards the respective language. Critical thinking among the learners connects to the ability to make the right decisions for solving some of the problems that may directly affect them (Dolapcioglu & Doğanay, 2022). Based on the different forms of challenges that may influence one's language acquisition, their interaction and connection to the environment are always needed to make the right improvement. Critical thinking allows most learners to critically analyze a specific situation and decide on the most effective approach that may address the individual case and assist in attaining their educational objectives. Although there are several ways that learners can be encouraged to understand the context of a new language, it is worth noting that giving the learners a chance to solve the problems they go through quickly is a meaningful way to realize this objective. This research aims to assess the influence and connection between problem-solving communication in learners struggling with second language acquisition. Through the findings of this study, it will be relatively easy to create unique ways to improve the learners' overall understanding. Item Metadata only Students’ perception of peer review in an EFL classroom(2018) Harutyunyan, Liliya; Poveda Ávila, María Fernanda; Harutyunyan, LiliyaEven though there is plenty of published information about the advantages of peer review, little can be found on what the beneficiaries (i.e. the students) feel about this method and what they might expect from it. In this paper, we present an analysis of the perceptions of 44 students at one of the largest universities in Ecuador, who had just undertaken a course in academic writing which used peer revision as the main tool for improving final essay compositions. The results show that participants of the groups who followed a peer revision approach do believe that they benefited from this method. This conclusion was reached after analysing students’ answers to a questionnaire which comprised closed option (multiple choice) questions as well as open-ended responses on the same three aspects pertaining to the impact of peer review: critical thinking, collaborative work and composition quality. This research is based on Vygotsky’s socio-cultural approach; it also supports and broadens previous investigations on this topic giving a more detailed and deep-rooted perspective, as participants who have used this methodology comment on its benefits and/or flaws.Item Open Access Word formation activities on facebook for EFL students(PUCE- Quito, 2022-02-18) López Méndez, Karla Yadira; Harutyunyan, LiliyaThis research project presents the description and analysis of Facebook as a supporting tool for reinforcement to acquire vocabulary related to Word formation. The theoretical framework was built on information from primary and secondary sources specifically books, articles, and journals based on experienced authors like Kent and Leaver (2014) describing Facebook as an educational tool; Kieffer and Lesaux (2008) with the importance of morphology; and Schmitt (2014) with the analysis of the affective filter and the acquisition of languages. Additionally, this study involved students of the second baccalaureate of “Liceo los Álamos” high school in Quito. Likewise, the design focuses on a qualitativequantitative method evidenced in two questionnaires, a pre-test and a post-test that were applied to a total population of 12 students. After applying this methodology, it could be determined that English teaching and learning based on Facebook could help students to extend and comprehend new vocabulary in written exercises effectively. Thus, this project becomes an extra resource to let learning be more significant and innovative.
