German volunteer EFL teaching in a low-income school in the south of Quito: perceptions on the experience

dc.description.abstractThis research took place in a low-income school in the south of Quito city. The purpose was to collect the perception that all members from the institution had after six German volunteers visited them for four weeks whose purpose was to actively participate in EFL classes with 8th and 10th graders in order to help them enhance their skills in English. The impact of TEFL volunteering was recorded using a descriptiveexplorative type of research using a series of semi-structured interviews, focal groups, pre and post written surveys and participant observation techniques promoting a dialogic and relational construction based on design research and collective imagination (Appadurai, 1996) at INEPE institute. The most remarkable results showed that the learners felt the volunteers’ English level actually enhanced EFL classes boosting their pronunciation and lexis. In correspondence, learners contributed with proactive participation and good behavior in class. Certainly, the analysis of volunteers and authorities’ perception contributed to understand that even though there was a positive cultural exchange during the experience which proved TEFL volunteering is advisable, there are also some issues inside EFL classes that are still permanent and quite problematic to solve unless educational authorities take action on this matter in the interest of improving and democratizing the decisionmaking process in regards to EFL classrooms in our country.en_US
dc.description.abstractEsta investigación tomó lugar en una escuela de bajos recursos en el sur de la ciudad de Quito. El propósito fue investigar la percepción que todos los miembros de la institución tuvieron depuesto de que 6 voluntarios alemanes los visitaron por 4 semanas cuyo propósito fue participar activamente en las clases de EFL con los estudiantes de 8vo y 10mo para ayudarles a mejorar sus destrezas en el Inglés. El impacto del voluntariado en TEFL fue registrado usando una investigación de tipo descriptiva -explorativa usando una serie de entrevistas semi-estructuradas, grupos focales, encuestas previas y posteriores al programa y técnicas de observación del maestrante promoviendo una construcción dialoga y relacional basado en investigación de diseño e imaginación colectiva (Appadurai, 1996) en el instituto INEPE. Los resultados más notables mostraron que los estudiantes sintiendo que el nivel de inglés de los voluntarios en realidad impulsó las clases EFL mejorando su pronunciación y vocabulario. Ciertamente, el análisis de la percepción de los voluntarios y las autoridades contribuyo a entender que aunque hubo un intercambio cultural positivo durante la experiencia, lo cual comprueba que el voluntariado EFL es recomendable, también hay otras cuestiones dentro de las clases EFL que son problemáticas y permanentes por resolver a menos que las autoridades educativas tomen cartas en el asunto con el propósito de democratizar el proceso de toma de decisiones relacionadas con las aulas EFL en nuestro país.en_US
